Church Leaders To Discuss Support For Haiti At CUA Conference

WASHINGTON— More than 350 attendeesfrom Haiti and from over 30 U.S. states, Canada and France will fill theNational Conference on Solidarity, “Haiti: One Table, Many Partners,” at TheCatholic University in Washington (CUA), June 1-3. This is the largestgathering ever of its kind between the Church in Haiti and the United States.

We are very pleased thatthis important conference hasattracted such great interest," said Bishop Chibly Langlois ofLes Cayes, Haiti, president of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti. “It's so important for all ofus committed to Haiti to come together in prayer and to share our experiences,ideas, and vision for Haiti’s future.”

“Helping the people of Haiti andsupporting the Church there in serving the needy and rebuilding Churchstructures as well as people’s lives is of great importance to the Church inthe United States. We are committed to doing everything we can to assist ourbrothers and sisters in Haiti” said Cardinal Sean O’Malley, archbishop ofBoston and a member of the Haiti Advisory Group of the U.S. Conference ofCatholic Bishops (USCCB).

“Haiti: One Table, Many Partners”will be hosted by USCCB and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The conference willinclude Haitian and U.S. Church leaders who are involved in parish and diocesanpartnerships, evangelization, church reconstruction, and those working insustainable development. In addition to expert speakers, the conference willfeature workshops on project areas like catechesis, reconstruction, educationand livelihoods.

Keynote speakers include ArchbishopThomas G. Wenski, archbishop of Miami and chairman of the USCCB Haiti AdvisoryGroup; Bishop Chibly Langlois; Carolyn Woo, president and chief executiveofficer of CRS; and Jesuit Father Allan Figueroa Deck, a noted speaker onmulticulturalism in the Church.
