Pope Names Bishop William E. Lori Archbishop of Baltimore

WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has appointedBishop William E. Lori of Bridgeport, Connecticut, as archbishop of Baltimore. Theappointment was publicized in Washington, March 20, by Archbishop Carlo MariaViganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Hesucceeds Cardinal Edwin O'Brien, who was named head of the Equestrian Order(Knights) of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem last August.

William Lori wasborn in Louisville, May 6, 1951. He studied at The Catholic University ofAmerica and St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and was ordained apriest for the Archdiocese of Washington in 1977. He was named an auxiliarybishop of Washington in 1995, and bishop of Bridgeport in 2001.

He currentlychairs the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the United StatesConference of Catholic Bishops.
