Pope Names Detroit Monsignor As Bishop Of Steubenville, Ohio
WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has namedMsgr. Jeffrey Monforton, 49, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, as bishopof Steubenville, Ohio. Theappointment was publicized in Washington, July 3, by Archbishop Carlo MariaViganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Bishop-electMonforton succeeds Bishop Daniel Conlon, who was named bishop of Joliet, Illinois,May 17, 2011.
JeffreyMonforton was born May 5, 1963, in Detroit. He earned a bachelor of arts degreein philosophy from Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, and a bachelor's, licentiateand doctorate in sacred theology from the Gregorian University, Rome.
Hewas ordained for the Detroit Archdiocese June 25, 1994, and was named achaplain to His Holiness, carrying the title monsignor, in 2005.
Assignmentsafter ordination included associate pastor, National Shrine of the LittleFlower, Royal Oak, Michigan, and taught in the religion department of theparish high school, 1994-1996. He was priest secretary to Cardinal Adam Maida,1998-2005, and served on the faculty of Sacred Heart Seminary, 2002-2005. Hewas pastor of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Shelby Township, Michigan,2005-2006; rector of Sacred Heart Seminary, 2006-2012, and from May until thepresent, was pastor of St. Andrew Parish Rochester, Michigan.
In2006 he was named to the board of trustees of Madonna University and for the2005-2006 academic year was an apostolic visitator of the Congregation forCatholic Education, for the apostolic visitation of seminaries and houses offormation in the United States.
The Steubenville Diocese includes230,391 persons, with 38,693 or 17 percent of them Catholic.
