The20,000-word report, which was dated November 29, 2011, was developed by aVatican panel of theological advisers. Publication was recently authorized bythe Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Thereport states that theologians and bishops have complementary roles infurthering understanding of the Catholic faith, but the former must ultimatelydefer to the latter on questions of definitive interpretation.
The International TheologicalCommission is comprised of theologians appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to studythemes of current interest and offer expert advice to the Vatican's Doctrinal Congregation.The report reflects discussions held in Rome 2004-2011.
