WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will perform the required canonical episcopal consultation on the sainthood cause of Mary Teresa Tallon, servant of God, during the bishops’ annual fall General Assembly, November 11-14, in Baltimore. Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, vice president of USCCB, will present the cause to the bishops for a discussion and a voice vote.
Episcopal consultation is a step in the Catholic Church’s canonization process. The Archdiocese of New York is investigating Tallon’s cause, and as the local bishop, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of USCCB, is seeking this consultation of the U.S. bishops while they are gathered for their meeting.
Tallon was born in Waterville, New York, on May 6, 1867, to Irish immigrants. She entered the Holy Cross Sisters at age 19, worked as a Catholic school teacher and instructed poor and neglected children. In 1920, she founded the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, a New York City-based community focused on contemplation and door-to-door, person-to-person ministry.
Tallon died in 1954. Her community continues its work of door-to-door family visitation and family and parish religious education. Parish Visitor Sisters work in the Archdiocese of New York, the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, the Diocese of Brooklyn, New York, the Diocese of Phoenix, two dioceses in Nigeria and the Archdiocese of Manila, Philippines.
