Pope Accepts Resignation Of Archbishop Hanus Of Dubuque, Names Bishop Jackels To Succeed Him; Names Msgr. Folda Bishop Of Fargo

WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Jerome George Hanus, OSB, 72, from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa, and named Bishop Michael Owen Jackels of Wichita, Kansas, 58, to succeed him.

WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Jerome George Hanus, OSB, 72, from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa, and named Bishop Michael Owen Jackels of Wichita, Kansas, 58, to succeed him. Pope Francis also named Msgr. John Folda, 51, a seminary rector in Nebraska, as bishop of Fargo, North Dakota.

The resignation and appointments were publicized in Washington, April 8, by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Archbishop-designate Jackels, a native of Rapid City, South Dakota, was born April 13, 1954. He has been bishop of Wichita since 2005. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1981. He holds a doctorate in spirituality from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (The Angelicum) in Rome and worked in the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1997-2005.

Archbishop Hanus is a member of the Benedictine Order and a native of Brainard, Nebraska. He was named archbishop of Dubuque in 1994. Prior to that, he was bishop of St. Cloud, Minnesota, 1987-1994. From 1984-1987, he was abbot president of Conception Abbey in Missouri.

Bishop-elect Folda, a native of Omaha, was born August 8, 1961. He attended the University of Nebraska, 1979-1983, and holds bachelor of arts, master of arts and master of divinity degrees from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Philadelphia, and a licentiate in sacred theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome.
He was ordained for the Diocese of Lincoln in 1989, and named a Chaplain to His Holiness, with the title “monsignor,” in 2007.

In 1989, after ordination he was named parochial vicar, Cathedral of the Risen Christ, Lincoln, and religion teacher at St. Pius X High School, Lincoln. In 1993, he was named pastor of St. Paulinus Parish, Syracuse, Nebraska, and Holy Trinity Parish, Avoca, Nebraska, and a teacher/counselor at Lourdes High School, Nebraska City, Nebraska. In 1995, he was named pastor of St. Leo Church, Palmyra, Nebraska, and St. Martin Church, Douglas, Nebraska. In 1997 he was named diocesan director of religious education and co-vicar for religious. In 1998, he was appointed spiritual director at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward, Nebraska, and the following year was named rector.

Bishop-elect Folda succeeds Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila, who was named Archbishop of Denver, May 29, 2012.

The Archdiocese of Dubuque has 17,403 square miles and includes 30 counties in Iowa. It has a population of 995,357 people, of whom 202,601, or 20 percent, are Catholic.  
The Diocese of Fargo has 35,786 square miles and includes 30 counties in North Dakota. It has a population of 390,972 people of whom 72,219, or 18 percent, are Catholic.
