Pope Accepts Resignation Of Bishop Galante As Bishop Of Camden, Names New York Auxiliary Bishop Dennis Sullivan To Succeed Him
WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has accepted theresignation of Bishop Joseph A. Galante, 74, from the pastoral governance ofthe Diocese of Camden, New Jersey and named Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan, 67, auxiliarybishop of New York, 67, to succeed him.

The appointment was publicized inWashington, January 8, by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, apostolic nuncio tothe United States.
Dennis J. Sullivan was born March17, 1945, in New York City. He attended Public School 102 and Mount St. MichaelAcademy in the Bronx, New York; Iona College; and St. Joseph's Seminary, wherehe earned a bachelor's and a master of divinity degree. He did further studiesin Spanish at the Catholic University in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Bishop Sullivan was ordained apriest for the New York archdiocese in 1971, and named a domestic prelate, withthe title "monsignor," in 1999. He was named an auxiliary bishop of theArchdiocese of New York in 2004.
Bishop Galante was named Bishop of Camden in 2004. Hewas named an auxiliary bishop of San Antonio in 1992, bishop of Beaumont, Texasin 1994, and co-adjutor bishop of Dallas in 1999.
Bishop Galante was ordained a priestfor the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1964 and holds a doctorate in canon lawfrom the Lateran University in Rome. He was named a prelate of honor with the title"monsignor," in 1983. He served for six years as the undersecretary for theCongregation for Religious in Rome, 1987-1992.
The Camden Diocese comprises thecounties of Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem in NewJersey. The diocese has a Catholic population of 511,822, or 35 percent of the diocese'stotal population of 1,443,274.
