New Resource for Combatting Antisemitism Released

On December 11, 2024, the Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, in partnership with the American Jewish Committee, released Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition.

This resource features Catholic commentary on various entries of the American Jewish Committee's Translate Hate glossary of antisemitic terms, theme, and memes. The additional teaching serves to further contextualize Translate Hate for the faithful who wish to learn how to identify and counter antisemitism.

At a time of rising antisemitism, this important milestone in the committee's initiative, "The Fruit of Dialogue: Catholics Confronting Antisemitism," is a welcome addition to tools for various educational contexts in the Church.

"In this Catholic edition, as our partners acknowledge, the first step in combating antisemitism is to understand it," said Bishop Joseph C. Bambera of Scranton, chairman of the committee. "In sharing these antisemitic themes and tropes in a Catholic context, we not only convey such hateful and evil themes, but more importantly convey a clear sense of the Church’s relationship to the Jewish people, our teaching on human dignity and our respect for the Jewish people, particularly in those areas where throughout history, we as members of the Church may have been negligent or inappropriate in our words and actions."

Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition is available online, as a PDF download, and physically.
