Eucharistic Celebration: Converging Theology - Divergent Practice United Methodist/Roman Catholic Dialogue, December, 1981

"The symbol of one bread designates not only the unity of the sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy Communion), but also beyond that the unity of the whole church. This includes, among many others, all Roman Catholics and United Methodists.  

To be divided is sinful. But by using our human will and intelligence, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we can keep removing barriers to eucharistic unity. We honor one another's faith and conscience. We respect one another's doctrine insofar as we understand it to be faithful to the one Spirit. In seeking to manifest unity, we also learn to appreciate the beauty, holiness and spiritual power of the Eucharist in the whole range of human experience.  

Within the context of many national and international ecumenical dialogues, the United Methodist Church and the Roman Catholic Church have been in conversation in the United States since 1966 through officially appointed representatives."
