USCC News Release: Lutheran/Catholic Accord on Papal Primacy Exalted by John Willig, March 5, 1974

WASHINGTON--Two Catholic leaders in the ecumenical movement have hailed the significance of the Lutheran Roman Catholic "Common Statement" on papal primacy made public March 4. The "Common Statement" by the 25 theologians of the Lutheran-Catholic Consultation was cited as a "landmark report" on the sensitive issue of papal primacy.

Bishop T. Austin Murphy, an auxiliary to the Archbishop of Baltimore, and the Catholic co-chairman of the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Consultation, expressed gratitude to all who had worked on this particular statement for the past three years.

Bishop Murphy noted "the promising results we have been able to reach thus far." Since the beginning of the national Lutheran-Catholic dialogues in 1965, broad areas of agreement have been uncovered on the Nicene Creed, the Christological center of Faith, Baptism, the Eucharist, and the Ministry of word and sacrament.
