Cardinal DiNardo's August 2012 Letter to Congress Regarding Conscience Protection
Letter from Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, Chairman, Committee on Pro-Life Activities, to the U.S. Congress Regarding Conscience Protection, August 3, 2012
Cardinal DiNardo urges Congress to take immediate legislative action against the federal contraceptive mandate, which violates religious freedom.
The federal mandate requires most health plans to cover sterilization, contraceptives, and related services (including some seen as abortion-inducing), even when employers or individuals object on moral or religious grounds. This mandate reflects a narrow and inadequate view of religious liberty, especially for organizations serving the public. Congress, not the courts, should act quickly to provide broad and consistent protection of conscience rights.
