H. E. Dr. Francisco Bertrand Galindo
Ambassador of El Salvador
2308 California Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C.   20008

Dear Mr. Ambassador:

I write concerning the arrest on April 22 of Professor Ruben Ignacio Zamora, a member of our sister Justice and Peace Commission, and his colleague at the Catholic University, Professor Eduardo Colindres.

I cannot imagine on what charges Messrs. Zamora and Colindres could have been arrested, although certain allegations have been advanced. I am assured by completely reliable sources that these allegations are false and that there is reason to fear for the safety and well-being of both men.

I would be grateful if you would transmit to the appropriate authorities in San Salvador this expression of deep concern on the part of this office.

Sincerely,

Rev. J. Bryan Hehir
Associate Secretary
Office of International Justice and Peace
United States Catholic Conference
