Dear Archbishop Rivera,

I write to express my personal sympathy, and that of our USCC Committee on International Policy, over the tragic death of Bishop Roberto Joaquin Ramos Umana.

With the Holy Father, we condemn this "barbarous assassination." Your own judgment, as reported in the media, that a full and impartial investigation is called for, seems to us to be fully justified, and we hope that the authorities will conduct such an investigation.

Please convey our expression of sympathy and assurance of prayers to the family of Bishop Ramos and to other members of the Episcopal Conference of EI Salvador.
