The Hon. Bernard Aronson
Assistant Secretary of State
Bureau of Inter-American Affairs
Washington, D.C. 20520-6258

Dear Secretary Aronson,

The successful conclusion of the Salvadoran peace process is, I know, a matter of great interest to you and one of true personal satisfaction. I extend congratulations and thanks to you for the important role you have played in bringing these delicate and complex negotiations to their present near-success.

I write to ask your help in assuring that one of the remaining elements of the process be enabled to conclude successfully. I refer to the definitive investigation of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero, presently being conducted by the United Nations Commission on the Truth.

It is my understanding that the Commission has not yet had access to all relevant documentation that may be in the possession of agencies of the U.S. Government. I would be most grateful if you would do all in your power to see to it that the Commission is granted access to all materials that may be pertinent to the case.

With sincere thanks for whatever you may be able to do on this matter and with best wishes for success in your next work, I remain

Sincerely yours,

(Rev.) Drew Christiansen, S.J.
Director
Department of Social Development and World Peace
United States Catholic Conference
