Statement from Colombian Bishops' Conference in Spanish and English, June 23, 2016
The Episcopal Conference recognizes the bilateral and definitive ceasefire agreement between the Colombian Government and FARC-EP as a historic step toward peace, emphasizing respect for human rights and justice.
This agreement is seen as the beginning of a broader process requiring continued dialogue and adherence to national and international law to rebuild hope and achieve lasting peace.
The Government is urged to provide clear, accurate public education about the agreements to dispel fears and doubts.
Before weapon surrender, transparent and public protocols for weapon destruction must be established and followed.
The Catholic Church reaffirms its commitment to victims and pledges ongoing support for reconciliation, forgiveness, and democratic values.
Colombians are invited to pray for peace and for leaders to promote dignity, justice, and unity. The process is entrusted to the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, Patroness of Colombia.
