We are deeply distressed that the conflict among opposing factions in El Salvador continues at a high level. As a result, thousands of persons have fled that troubled country and others have been stranded abroad fearing for their very lives should they return at this time.

In the United States these individuals daily face the threat of deportation by our government to El Salvador. Many are forced to apply for political asylum as the only means of seeking at least a temporary haven and unfortunately the vast majority of these applications are being denied.

It is our feeling that while their country remains in such a state of turmoil, the citizens of El Salvador who are stranded in the U.S. should not be forced to leave when their very physical well being, regardless of political philosophy, is in danger. We, therefore, urge that a moratorium be placed on all deportations to El Salvador, at least until such a time as the government in power is in a position to guarantee the safety of its citizens.
