Letter from Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop Lori to the U.S. Senate on the Conscience Protection Act of 2017
Letter from Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Chairman, Committee on Pro-Life Activities and Archbishop William E. Lori, Chairman, Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty to the U.S. Senate on the Conscience Protection Act of 2017, February 8, 2017
Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop Lori urge U.S. Senators to support and co-sponsor the Conscience Protection Act of 2017 (S. 301).
The goal of the legislation is to protect health care providers from being forced to participate in or facilitate abortions in violation of their moral or religious beliefs. The bill is the Senate version of prior legislation that passed in the House in 2016 with bipartisan support. Existing federal conscience protections are ineffective largely because enforcement through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which has not acted consistently or promptly on violations.
