Letter from Archbishop Kurtz and Archbishop Naumann to the House of Representatives on the Conscience Protection Act of 2019
Letter from Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, Chairman, Committee for Religious Liberty and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, Chairman, Committee of Pro-Life Activities to the House of Representatives on the Conscience Protection Act of 2019, April 3, 2019
Archbishop Kurtz and Archbishop Naumann urge members of the House of Representative to co-sponsor and support the Conscience Protection Act of 2019 (H.R. 2014). The purpose of the bill is to protect health care providers from being forced to participate in or support abortion against their moral or religious beliefs and ensure providers can continue offering care without coercion.
The bishops argue that protecting conscience rights upholds religious liberty and civil rights, respects the sanctity of unborn life, and preserves the ethical integrity of the medical profession. They note that many physicians, regardless of religion, do not perform abortions and that abortion is considered fundamentally different from other medical procedures.
