Sometimes women and men who have participated in abortion think, “I don’t deserve to be forgiven. My sins are too great.” Thankfully, God’s love and mercy are greater than all the sins of all time. Jesus offers his grace and forgiveness to every repentant heart. All we have to do is ask and begin to trust in his mercy. Forgiveness is offered in a special way through the Catholic Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which allows us to receive forgiveness of sins and be reconciled with God, self, the Church family, and the human family. The Church proclaims with hope and compassion that those who have participated in abortion can receive forgiveness, consolation, and healing through God’s infinite love and mercy. 

Those who suffer shame and guilt after abortion may receive confidential and compassionate care from Project Rachel Ministry, the U.S. Catholic Church’s outreach to those who have been involved in abortion. Project Rachel Ministry is a diocesan-based network of priests, religious, counselors, and laypeople who together provide a caring response to those suffering in the aftermath of abortion. In addition to making referrals to Sacramental Reconciliation, the ministry provides an integrated network of services, including pastoral counseling, support groups, retreats, and referrals to licensed mental health professionals.

It is open to people of all faiths or no faith.
