Pope Francis emphasized a vision of a missionary church that served the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized of our world. From his early writings like Evangelii Gaudium that dreamed of a “missionary impulse capable of transforming everything” to his landmark encyclicals Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti that called us to address the urgency of environmental challenges and the need for universal fraternity and social friendship, Pope Francis was both prophet and pastor for the challenges of our time.
